Boone

A few weekends ago, Heather and I went to Boone, NC for a weekend getaway.  We had a wonderful time!  As you can see from the pictures, we ate our way around!  We didn't get there until late on Friday night so we didn't start our adventure until Saturday morning.  We decided to check out The Daniel Boone Inn for breakfast which was recommended by one of my clients who lives in the area.  It is a historic country style restaurant which has been open in Boone for over 60 years.  The restaurant has the family style theme where you are served at the table with a variety of items.  There are no menus.  Let me tell you, this was scary for me and Heather but when they sat down two warm, homemade cinnamon biscuits for us to snack on until out other food arrived, we were sold!  They were delicious.  Everything else was as wonderful from the country ham to the eggs to the grits and even the orange juice.  We got there early so we were in and out.  I would suggest getting there early if you are going to stop in because it is a popular stop and people were lined out the door when we were leaving.  Next, we went to a local coffee shop to read the paper and relax a bit.  We were lucky enough to score two leather chairs on the top floor of Expresso News in downtown Boone which is a quaint spot with excellent coffee and what looks to be awesome pastries.  We were full from breakfast but when I am in Boone on business, I may just stop in for a treat and another cup of Joe!  To continue the journey, we rode to Blowing Rock for a hike because it is so close to Boone.  After the hike, we made it back to walk around in downtown Blowing Rock, walk in some of the shops, and try out the Town Tavern for lunch. The beautiful sunny weather drew us to enjoy lunch on their outdoor patio.  In the picture you will see our mini corn dog appetizer.  When we got them to our table, we both wondered why more sports bars don't have these as a treat on their menu.  So good!  Next, we shared the grilled chicken buffalo wrap with tater tots.  To finish the meal, we decided to have a Foothills Brewery beer.  Foothills Brewery is in Winston-Salem and we seem to always enjoy their beers when we have them and this one was no exception.  We had the Winter Ale.  It was wonderfully crispy and perfect for the winter season.  Later in the evening, we had a dinner reservation at Casa Rustica, an Italian Restaurant that has also been in Boone for over 35 years.  It seems to be a staple in the area as it was also extremely busy with wonderful Italian smells fuming out of the building.  We had to wait a few minutes for our table but once we were sat everything just flowed perfectly.  We enjoyed the Caprese salad and French Onion Soup for an appetizer.  Next, we couldn't resist the pasta.  I got a the chicken fettuccine pasta with vodka sauce and Heather ordered the shrimp fettuccine pasta with Alfredo sauce.  We wouldn't have changed a thing about the meal!  Of course, we were too full for dessert but maybe next time we will save some room!  If you are around the area, you should definitely try out these food spots but also while we were in Boone we got our Christmas tree.  One of my clients owns, Cornett Deal Tree Farm, which is a family ran business.  It is in Vilas, North Carolina which is only about 20 to 25 minutes northwest of Boone.  It's a beautiful ride to the farm through the country roads.  They have apple cider and a hayride too.  We are looking forward to making this one of our family traditions.  We are so fortunate to live in North Carolina and have all of these places so close!
